The Riverhead Elks Lodge honored 10 elementary students in the Riverhead Central School District as winners in its annual Flag Day essay contest during a ceremony at the lodge on June 8. Each student was presented with a certificate of recognition and enjoyed a luncheon with family and friends.

It is again time to promote the Allentown Flag Day Association’s Annual Joe Zeller Allentown Flag Day Association Essay Contest which for years has been a joint project of the Allentown School Districts and the Allentown Flag Day Association. The essay contest is open to all students in grades 6, 7, and 8 in the Allentown School Districts and.
The pair has been active over the years in PTSA, booster clubs, Anaheim Sister City, Anaheim Flag Day, the Nutcracker Tree Lighting event just to name a few of their volunteer activities. Probably most rewarding is their transformation to Mr. and Mrs. Claus during the holiday season where they listen to the wishes of more than 1000 children bringing joy during the holiday season.
The theme for the essay contest was “The American Flag.” The pictures will again be displayed in the store windows around the community for everyone to see since the kids did such a great job. They will be up for Loyalty Day, May 1, and Armed Forces Day, May 19.
After a brief introduction, the winners of the Emmaus Flag Day Association’s poetry and essay contest read their award-winning submissions and received their certificates from Gilbert. The first essay contest was held in 1970, with the poetry section added in 1977 by Susan Kolitsko, who eventually served as president from 1986 through 2003.
